Pay With a Tweet

This is a great website, which allows you to make things available to download in exchange for a simple tweet or Facebook status update. I’ve not used it before but have seen others make a success out of it so thought I’d give it a go over the next few weeks as I make a few covers available for you all to download.

Although it costs the ‘purchaser’ nothing it is potentially even more valuable than if you were to charge money. For precisely the reason that it costs nothing, therefore making it a much more appealing/less risky prospect to your audience.

The social payment then becomes priceless because with the exponential growth that occurs if people like what they hear, traffic will be driven to your site/other social networks and you have an opportunity to connect with a whole new audience that would otherwise never have taken a chance on you. It doesn’t cost anything to set it up as an artist either if you use the platform already offered by Pay With a Tweet.

Since 2005 I have done a whole load of covers but until now have only got round to recording one or two.

As the release of One World Less gets closer I thought it would be a good opportunity to record some of these songs and make them available to download using this system.

I’m hoping to get one done each week – I will try at any rate. I realise there are a good number that I have pulled out the bag over the years so I’ll get as many done as possible.

First song: The Strokes – Last Nite

Here is the page with all the songs so far. The list will build as time moves on so keep checking back.

Thanks for your support. Keep spreading the love.

I’ve Come Back to Earth

It has been about six months since I really posted anything of significance on here and four months since the last podcast. A lot has happened in this time as I was deeply distracted by a severe onset of creativity. This was great in terms of what it means for the production of new work but it has unfortunately meant the temporary sacrifice of most other things that don’t involve sitting in a garage or a shed and beavering away on my computer.

The good news however is that I have come out the other end of this tunnel visioned season with a new album, a novel and a bunch of artwork that will all make up a project I plan to release over the course of 2011.

It is the culmination of a series of ideas, characters and dreams that I have experienced since starting out as Atlum Schema five years ago. Without really anticipating what I would do next it has just completely fallen together since January and it feels like it was meant to be more so than anything I’ve ever done before so I am pretty satisfied.

Although I’ve only been consciously working on it this year it really is a project that draws together everything very nicely and feels somewhat like the thing I have been unconsciously working up to since 2005.

This is just a quick post to let you know that I have re-emerged from the depths and will be posting and podcasting like I was never away. I have merged my blogs together and given the whole thing a bit of a makeover, which will hopefully make it a little easier to navigate.

I will be starting a little campaign to raise some money for the release of One World Less at the start of October. You can read more about what it will entail here. I’m excited about getting it released and really looking forward to getting out and playing a load of shows this year. The new Atlum Schema band will be a big feature this year too, so prepare yourself to be hit harder than ever before!

One World Less

Within every human mind there lies a unique world. On this planet there are around seven billion different worlds, each of them as significant as you consider your own. Each one dreams. Each one desires. And each one is inevitably affected on a daily basis by the natural forces from vast numbers of others, with constructive, destructive and unforeseen consequences. Conversely, each one inevitably affects on a daily basis a number of others. As ruler of our own world it becomes our responsibility to decide how we position ours and in turn how it chooses to respond to the way other worlds treat it.

We are part of a complex system of spheres, bouncing off one another, constantly in flux, constantly moving, and forever reacting to the various external stimuli that we encounter each day.

One World Less is a point I have reached after five years doing this Atlum Schema thing and has evolved into a somewhat mammoth piece of work comprising 16 songs, a novella and almost thirty pieces of artwork. Despite this it has only taken six months to bring it together and has been the curation rather than creation from five years’ worth of various inspirations.

The project is my understanding of what art means in my own world and how I am starting to believe it is our duty as humans to strive to all become artists. I have come to the apprehension that we are all born to be artists and have constantly to assess our progress in the attainment of such honour. If we are not artists then we are prisoners. We become prisoners of systems, emotions, experiences, self-obsession and other people’s expectations to name but a few masters. If we are to be artists we must find a way to break the chains that hold us and then our art is how we use our situations, tools and abilities to help others do the same.

This might sound pretentious but it has been a perception that has helped me to make sense of what I am doing, why I’m doing it and work out whether there is any value in me carrying on to anyone other than myself (where value can oftentimes feel insignificant). So I will explain a little about what I mean when I say it has helped me in this.

On numerous occasions over the last year I have been genuinely close to giving up writing, performing and to some extent enjoying music at all. There have been times where I have felt overwhelmed by a sense of pointlessness and stupidity when it comes to thoughts of producing and releasing my own music. The problem is I don’t think I could give up if I tried because it is simply something I have got to do for its own sake whether anyone is listening or not. I was in a conceptual nightmare, which made me re-evaluate a few things. If I have to do it, what is making me want to stop? Why would I feel that way?

I spent lots of time trying to find the answer to this and came to the conclusion that it lies in motivations. I had got myself into a series of conflicts within my own head over how best to create a structure around myself in which I could make a living from music. I had become bogged down in a marsh of money motives and the need to use music to make it. I just put my head down and got on with it and was subconsciously feeling trapped in a place I didn’t want to be.

When I was a kid I wanted to be a pop star. Most kids do. As I grew up I wanted to be a rock star. There is a difference. This was a dream I just assumed I was still pursuing until this last year when I realised I was no closer to getting there. The reason I was no closer was not because I had tried and failed but actually because I hadn’t really tried at all. But why hadn’t I tried? Well, because in reality I didn’t really have that desire to be one anymore. The problem was I had not yet got round to telling myself. I was reading lots of literature about ‘how to make it in music’, and was doing a token amount of demo-peddling to a few ‘people of importance’ but my heart wasn’t really in it. Yet, I was still making music and in a significant and massively enjoyable way. I felt torn between these indefinable forces and was at a loss over what to do.

I sat down and started writing a book. It didn’t take me long to realise that I just needed to chill out and get set free from thinking down the paths that have been trod before and the structures put in place by those who want to make money and control things. It was clear that when you become so focussed on progressing yourself, your chances of finding new paths fade because everything you do turns into a means to reach your desired end and this usually means appeasing those with the power. You need the established structures to help you get there and fear cripples both you and the establishment from doing things differently and caring about anyone but yourself.

I realised that there is something worth fighting for in the music world and that I do want to be a part of a movement that is pushing against the status quo and embracing a time of transition with a real sense of renewed empowerment. It is not about the music industry in itself, and it is not about an overwhelming desire that I have to be a musician, but rather it is a seemingly innate and unstoppable urge to be an artist. It is a yearning for justice, equality and to break away from the chains that bind us by systems and people who are desperate to use us for their own gains (in all aspects of life). I realised that art is about much more than a song, a painting, or a story. It is about ideas that inspire action and a release from slavery (of all types).

As I finally conceded my readiness to call Atlum Schema a day I had an overwhelming sense of clarity. It was as if I needed to reach that point of letting it go so that I could reach some understanding of what it is I actually do, why it matters and get a grip of it again. I’ll have a go at describing my conclusion:

We are all artists. We all have different tools because we have different worlds. There is no use thinking in terms of how to ‘make it’ in music, or indeed your own chosen path, but rather we need to see ourselves as having already made it to where we are right now because at the end of the day that is all we really have. If we use what we have to hand here and now in order to make artists of one another, then we can be satisfied. We do this by seeing the things that imprison one another and we help demolish them. What this means and looks like in reality will be forever in flux and will vary widely from world to world, but as long as we are living with a less selfish, more intrinsic purpose in a larger body of humanity then artistry is for the taking.

On a personal level, for now I am fortunate enough to have been able to make music and write a book. It does not define me but hopefully is a manifestation of my desire to be an artist. It is a small part of a much bigger picture, which I am excited to unveil as I attempt to live less like a prisoner myself and look for chances to help others do the same. And my renewed happiness with what I’m doing represents the reality that I am desperate to remain separate from the often-warped vision of what it means to suffer for ones art.

So, here’s to another new year!

Lessons I’ve Learned From Swimming

idea kid

I try to go swimming about three times a week. It gives me time to think, refreshes me and gives me exercise. Lovely. After many months of going to the same pool I have noticed a number of things that I’m sure are similar at any other standard busy complex. I generally go during times of public swimming, which means no lanes and anyone is allowed in.

On the whole people swim lengths but there are a couple of regulars who prefer widths. There is no traffic light system so the rest of us have had to evolve etiquette for dealing with them. Generally this involves either swimming under them, ploughing on through or waving them past. Because my goggles are usually full of water I am forced into the middle option. There have been a number of collisions, for which I must confess I have no insurance but haven’t damaged my Speedos or goggles irreparably thus far.

While swimming last week I realised there is metaphorical potential in some of what happens at the pool:

1. It just takes one person not swimming straight to throw every swimmer off course

There always seems to be at least one person being pulled or pushed by the gentle current. They either do not notice or do not possess the strength to right their wonk. During busy periods all it takes is one of these people to affect the running of the whole pool as the rest of us are forced to correct our lines to avoid collisions.

When the pool is full of unaware swimmers who just go along with where they are being pushed you end up with people swimming the other side without realising. I was forced almost the whole width of the pool at one point last week.

There is always ‘the serious swimmer’ who refuses to move – this can be highly irritating when the pool is busy and the person swimming diagonals is also in there. Everyone needs to work together to make it happen fluently – speed does not give you an a moral right to swim straight – you end up being hated. Obviously there is nothing people can do about it because survival of the fittest and everything but just remember, you’re being a dick.

The woman who insists on treading water in the middle of the pool for fifteen-minute stretches doesn’t help matters either.

Lesson: All it takes is one person to change the direction of a pool full of individual swimmers.

2. When the pool is busy everyone that gets in is annoying…including you

When you’re in the busy pool you see someone getting in and will him or her not to get in near you. It is very selfish of them to go swimming now, can’t they see its busy and that you are trying to swim in peace?

These are the thoughts of everyone when you get in too. You know, at that point when you’re feeling annoyed at everyone already in there for taking up so much space…

Lesson: Everyone is thinking the same as you. When you get in you’d like to feel welcome wouldn’t you?

3. If you like to take extended breaks between lengths don’t automatically assume your position in the pool is permanent

This is often one for non-serious swimmers, old women and teenagers. If you choose to take long breaks then you are going to have to search the pool for free space when you want to go again. Where you swam your previous length is no longer your territory because you have sacrificed it in the name of laziness. It is very annoying when you set off again in the middle of great traffic just because you swam there ten minutes ago.

This is similar to those people at university libraries that go in, put their bag in a space first thing in the morning and expect to be able to sit there when they return six hours later. It is selfish, abusive and wrong.

Lesson: You snooze, you lose. At least that is the way it should be.

These are a few of my quick thoughts. What observations have you made in the pool/gym/any other type of leisure establishment?

Ten Days Off (A documentary about my trip to Scandinavia)

In April I went to Scandinavia with my friend Dan.

We met our friend Lucille out there.

We documented much of what we did. Not in a sad, pathetic, care more about the video than the trip sort of way…well maybe, but we had some exciting times, including nearly touching the Queen of Denmark, I played a gig and we got “stuck” in Stockholm under the giant ash cloud.

We finally managed to circumcise four hours of footage to a manageable, watchable and even dare I say enjoyable length, and it has been pieced together in a coherent and amusing style so that you too can experience every smell, site and sound from our life-changing adventure.

The first part is below, there are six more. You can find the entire set BY CLICKING HERE. Please enjoy, thank you.

Lee Mitchell – Lovesong No.3

ATU

Ireland has a habit of producing passionate singer-songwriters. Lee is one of these. I was listening to Lovesong No.3 and wondering what it would sound like if he had an English accent. I decided it might be a little weird, that maybe it would sound like a cheese-fest. But there is something that the Irish foundations just break through, bringing heart, soul and major passion to the song, turning it into a beautiful thing. Lee produces such beautiful things.

We were lucky enough to have him performing at the first 07:OH:03 in January 2010 and seeing him play this live made the hairs on my neck stand up. His voice is pure liquid!

Check out my interview with him below:

Here is his Myspace

The Momeraths – Millipede Stomps

ATU

In their Myspace genre description The Momeraths refer to themselves as Italian Pop folk for children. I’m not entirely sure what this would sound like so I’m more than happy to take their word for it. I was made to sit up and listen when I first heard Millipede Stomps because of the interesting rhythmical use of vocals – the staccato stabs of the voices go with the stop start feel of the percussion. It is really colourful and fun.

I reckon that if the music doesn’t work out Claire and Paolo could easily be children’s television presenters. I make that judgement purely on what they sound like and the type of music they clearly love to produce!

It inspired me to really think about and be aware of the importance of the voice in songwriting and how you use it can make a massive difference to the sound and feel of a track. I look forward to hearing more.
